THE ART OF INDEPENDENCE
As the creative and cultural centre of Melbourne, it is no surprise that the CBD is in constant artistic flux - cutting edge design clashes with cultural heritage institutions in what could only be described as a melting pot for the creative and multicultural. Although the CBD is home to international artistic giants the NGV, ACCA and ACMI, art-walk public and commercial galleries, artist run spaces, studios and laneways to discover this diverse urban art landscape.
Celestial Body Model explores the potential to photographically record intangible experiences emanating from practical processes within deep ecology. Deep ecology observes that psychological and spiritual disarray can be attributed to the 'illusion of separation' between humans and the rest of the natural world.
Over the past year, the artist attended several deep ecology workshops and became a participant-observer of its processes and healing ways. For this exhibition, Kate focuses on the activity Earth as Peppercorn, where workshop participants slowly walk through a scale-model of the solar system to experience its vastness of space in comparison to planet proportions.
Deep ecology themes of connectedness, observation and mindfulness are reflected in this exhibition through employing different photographic techniques to greatly slow down and extend the photographic process of making an image.
